Rent a Car

, Bulgarias newest and most modern resort is situated at the foothills of the Pirin mountains and is listed as a UNESCO world Heritage site. The mixture of old world charm, good choices in hotel and chalet accommodations and breathtaking views, make it an excellent choice for your ski holiday. You fly into Sofia which is the nearest airport and then a 1.5 hour taxi ride will get you to the hill or you can fly. Also, you can fly to Thessaloniki and then by transfer to Bansko.  A new road was finished in 2013 that cut the transfer time to under an hour and a half.

The mountain itself, all though not the biggest in the world, is growing and there is talk of linking it with some smaller local resort as well as adding new lifts onto the surrounding mountains, so when you are there be sure to sign the petition for Bansko to build a second gondola, if this goes ahead it would ease traffic considerably as the existing gondola is currently the only way of getting up the mountain without using local roads. Also in peak weeks the gondola can have lengthy queues so choose when to go wisely!

Natural snow conditions can last into the middle of April so Bansko can have quite a long season, this is supplemented by 59 fixed and portable snow cannons which  guarantee rideable conditions until the end of April.

Shopping in Bansko

The Board Shop

76 Pirin Str., Bansko 2770, Bulgaria
Tel: +359 8228 20763

The Board Shop is Bansko's premier retail outlet for all things related to free-ride snowboarding and skiing and is located right in the middle of Pirin Street.

The friendly, knowledgeable and helpful team at The Board Shop are all experienced skiers and snowboarders and what they don’t know about the latest equipment or technical clothing is not worth knowing so take our advice and go and take theirs!

They also have equipment to rent and can help with ski and snowboard services such as fixing gouges, ski or board waxing (overnight) and we were amazed to find one of their team actually rebuilding a much cherished board which had been completely snapped in half.In brief, these guys know what they are doing so should be the first place you head if you are in the market for new equipment or just want to get some sound advice about what you should consider when you are ready to purchase.

You may also want to drop in and say “hi” just in case they are having one of their many demo weeks when manufacturers give them a load of brand new equipment for their customers to try out before they buy. What better way of choosing a new setup than getting the best advise then trying the best equipment in town.
