Royal Jordanian - History
- In December, 1963, Alia was established and started operations after a royal decree by the King Hussein, using a fleet that consisted of two Handley Page Dart Herald and a Douglas DC-7 aircraft to serve Kuwait City (Kuwait), Beirut (Lebanon) and Cairo (Egypt) from Amman.- Two years later, Rome became the first European destination.
- In 1966, Alia became a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
- During the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the two DC-7 aircraft in the fleet were destroyed, and then replaced by two Fokker F-27s.
- In the following two years, new routes were added to the network, most of them in the Middle East - Dhahran, Doha, Tehran, but also Munich and Nicosia.
- In 1971, first jets were added to the fleet - Boeing 707s, while Frankfurt, Madrid, Copenhagen, Karachi and Abu Dhabi joined the network.
- In 1974, the Boeing 727 was added to the fleet and, one year later, the first Jordanian female flight engineer became the first Arab woman to serve as a cockpit crew member.
- In 1977, two Boeing 747-200 aircraft were acquired, and direct flights to New York were started.
- In 1979, Alia became a founding member of the Arab Airlines Technical Consortium (AATC) and, one year later, its own IBM computer center was inaugurated.
- In the following years, new aircraft and routes were added to the network, and the Queen Alia International Airport was inaugurated on the 25th of May, 1983.
- In 1985, Alia's first woman pilot received the rank of Captain.
- One year later, Alia changed its trade name to Royal Jordanian.
- In 1987, the first two Airbus A310-300 join the Royal Jordanian fleet.
- In 1989, Ankara was added to the network, and the Gabriel Automated Ticket System was introduced in all Royal Jordanian offices worldwide.
- In 1991, Toronto and Colombo are added to the network, followed by Jakarta and Berlin, the next year.
- In 1994, Royal Jordanian carried over 1.2 million passengers, and its staff members reached over 5,500 one year later.
- In 1996, Royal Jordanian's network reached 48 cities on four continents.
- In 1999, Royal Jordanian was awarded both the Arch of Europe and Internationa Gold Star for Quality.
- On the 1st of July, 2001, Royal Jordanian banned smoking on all flights.
- On the 17th of December, 2003, Royal Jordanian launched the Royal Vacations Program.
- In mid-April, 2005, Royal Jordanian was awarded the IATA Operations Safety Audit (IOSA) certificate, ranking second among the Arab airlines and 28th of 270 international air carriers.
- In mid-October, 2005, Royal Jordanian was invited to join oneworld, becoming the first Arab airline to join one of the three global alliances.
- On the 1st of April, 2007, Royal Jordanian officially joined oneworld.
- The airline continued its expansion in the years to follow, adding new services and constantly renewing its fleet.
- Until now, there have been four deadly accidents involving Alia aircraft, and only one since the airline became Royal Jordanian, a hijacker killed on the 5th of July, 2000, on board an Airbus A320. Of the previous four incidents, the worst occurred on the 3rd of August, 1975, when a Boeing 707 heading for Agadir, in Morocco, crashed into high ground, killing all 188 people on board.
